Realizing I’m not finished having kids after all

My name is Joe. I married my high school sweetheart at 23. We had our first child the next year and our second a year later. We agreed that two kids was enough and our family was complete, so shortly after our second child was born I had a vasectomy. My wife had done her part in carrying and giving birth to our two kids, so I felt it was my turn to take care of birth control. We were the perfect family – two parents, two wonderful and healthy kids, and our golden retriever.

Unfortunately, things weren’t as perfect as we thought they were. Maybe it was the pressure of dealing with two kids in diapers and a lot of sleepless nights, not to mention trying to make ends meet on one income. Whatever the reasons, my marriage broke down and my wife and I split up.

It took a few years to adjust to the divorce, but eventually I met a funny and smart woman named Lucy. She’s a bit older than me, but the age difference hasn’t really mattered. Lucy always wanted kids, but she said she just hadn’t been in the right relationship until she met me. She was clear from the beginning that the kid issue was a deal-breaker for her. I’m crazy about her and can’t imagine my life without her. So after thinking that I was done having kids, I found myself considering having my vasectomy reversed. The doctors say that since my vasectomy was done less than 10 years ago, I have a pretty good chance of having a successful reversal. So I’ve booked the procedure for next month and we’re going for it. At 38, Lucy doesn’t have a lot of time to spare and we need to start trying to have kids as soon as possible. I’m not looking forward to the surgery or to the recovery period, but I know it’s the right decision. I love Lucy and I want to have a family with her. I also really love being a dad and I know Lucy will be a great mom. So, I hope I’m not finished having kids after all!
