Celebrities open up about their fertility problems

According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, infertility affects 7.3 million women and their partners in the United States. In Canada, infertility is also on the rise, with 16% (roughly 1 in 6 couples) experiencing fertility challenges. Yet, despite the increasing number of people experiencing infertility, there continues to be stigma and secrecy around this experience.

Recently, Jaime King, an actor on Heart of Dixie, admitted on Instagram that she suffers from PCOS and endometriosis. She had 5 miscarriages, 5 IVF cycles, and 26 intrauterine inseminations before giving birth to her son.

Jaime isn’t the only celebrity who has been open about her fertility struggles. An article on Stylecaster.com profiled 12 celebrities who have publically talked about their difficulties conceiving. A few highlights:

  • After giving birth to her son James Wilkie in 2002, Sarah Jessica Parker was unable to have another child. She and husband Matthew Broderick became parents to twins Loretta and Tabitha in 2009 via a surrogate.
  • Giuliana Rancic experienced a miscarriage after an IVF cycle, followed by an unsuccessful second round of IVF. In 2012, Guiliana and her husband Bill welcomed their son Edward Duke through a surrogate.
  • Courtney Cox revealed a history of miscarriages. “I get pregnant pretty easily, but I have a hard time keeping them.”  She gave birth to daughter Coco in 2004 after undergoing IVF treatments.
  • Nicole Kidman and husband Keith Urban welcomed their second daughter, Faith Margaret, through a gestational carrier after experiencing infertility. Nicole and Keith are also parents to daughter Sunday Rose. Nicole adopted children Conner and Isabella with her first husband, Tom Cruise.
  • Hugh Jackman and wife Deborra-Lee Furness adopted their children Ava and Oscar after years of infertility and unsuccessful IVF treatments. They are now advocates for adoption through National Adoption Awareness Week and the Worldwide Orphans Foundation.
