One in a million: California couple gives birth to identical triplets
A California couple has given birth to a rare set of naturally conceived identical triplets.
Dr. William Gilbert, director of Sutter Women’s Services, says the odds of producing identical triplets without the aid of fertility medications ranges from 1 in 1 million to 1 in 100 million. Identical triplets are produced when one fertilized egg splits into three.
Parents Hannah and Tom Hepner, of Quincy, California, named their little girls Abby, Brin, and Laurel. The triplets weighed in at 3 pounds, 2 ounces; 3 pounds, 11 ounces; and 4 pounds, respectively. The triplets will remain in hospital until they can maintain their body temperature, gain weight, and are able to eat properly.
Mom Hannah says, “We understand that they are going to be individuals. We look forward to finding out who those individuals are and helping them along the way.”
