IVF cannot help everyone become pregnant.

IVF has helped a significant number of women and couples achieve their desire for a child. Without treatment, many would have never been able to become parents.

However, depending on the country, state, or in Canada – the province – IVF may be restricted based on the age of the woman. For example, some clinics will not perform IVF on a woman over the age of 45 using her own eggs, because the odds of a successful pregnancy are very low and the rates of miscarriage and fetal abnormalities are high. The costs can also be prohibitive, especially when multiple cycles of IVF are needed – as is often the case. For example, in all provinces in Canada other than Quebec, a single cycle of IVF including medications will cost in the range of $8,000 to $10,000. In the United States, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine the average cost of one cycle of IVF is $12,400.

The success rates for IVF are also dependent on a number of factors such as the age of the woman and the age of her partner, the woman’s previous fertility history, egg and sperm quality, etc.

Women whose eggs are no longer viable, have the option of undergoing IVF with donor eggs from a younger woman in order to increase the chances of a pregnancy. Read more about this option here.
