Although lots of celebrities are becoming pregnant in their 40s and 50s, they are likely using younger women’s eggs.
What the media doesn’t usually reveal is that many older celebrities have used the eggs of a younger woman to get pregnant. When an older woman uses a younger woman’s eggs, pregnancy rates are much higher and the risk of chromosomal abnormalities for the baby are significantly reduced. However, there are still higher risks of miscarriage for these older moms, and of pregnancy complications and premature births. Many celebrities, whether using their own or another woman’s eggs, have also had to go through several costly and time-consuming IVF cycles. Some celebrities, like Celine Dion, have been more open about having gone through IVF six times before she was able to conceive her twins. Some celebrities have even opted out of pregnancy altogether, and have had a surrogate carry a child for them.
If you’re in your 40’s and unable to use your own eggs or uterus to have a child, you may want to consider reading our questions on egg donation or surrogacy in our Third Party Options section.
Why won’t celebrities admit that they used some younger woman’s eggs to get pregnant? Is it because they want to seem eternally youthful and fertile? While I think fertility and undergoing fertility treatments is really private, I also think that celebrities have a responsibility to correct the misperception out there that women can easily become pregnant in their 40s and 50s!
